AI pricing, often seen as redistributive, can also be discriminatory and biased. Some companies may employ ethical appeals in their Explainable AI methods to create an illusion of fairness. Our goals are to 1) understand (non)marginalized consumer responses to appeals and 2) develop interventions empowering them to identify unfair treatment.
Confronted by student protests advocating an end to partnerships with the fossil fuel industry, the University of Amsterdam initiated a dialogue involving internal stakeholders, encompassing both staff and students. This research delves into the diverse viewpoints expressed by stakeholders throughout the dialogue.
The inaugural workshop focused on climate/environmental policy, emphasizing merging perspectives from academia, policymakers, and the Amsterdam community. It aims to address climate change inequalities and explore sustainable solutions within the Netherlands and Europe. The conference will feature academic talks and stakeholder dialogues, fostering communication and coordination across various sectors and potentially exposing our students to the research frontier and center of public debate.
This project aims to understand consumer perceptions of corporate human rights abuses beyond canonical Western perspectives, specifically, in cultures with higher power distance, wherein inequalities in society are accepted more. Furthermore, we aim to identify factors mitigating the unequal perceptions of CHRA tied to where and to whom abuses occur.
This project explores if global banks' foreign operations align with their environmental sustainability commitments. It tests if banks promoting sustainability have fewer assets in carbon-intensive economies and if their presence changes after announcing sustainability commitments. Provided banks adapt their operations, we assess the impact of these decisions on affected economies.
ESG litigation against companies has risen sharply. In this project, we investigate the impact of such litigation on the behavior of firms including their real ESG activities and disclosures.
As most organizations rely on teams to solve problems, it is crucial to investigate how unethical conduct transpires in groups. In our project, we observe real group discussions that revolve around ethical dilemmas. We aim to identify conversational patterns that predict bad choices and uncover how they can be prevented.
In May 2024, we organize the ‘Theories and Methods in Macroeconomics’ conference, one of the largest annual pure-macro events in Europe, at the University of Amsterdam. We want to put a particular focus on the theme ‘Sustainable and Resilient Economy’ by hosting invited sessions on climate change, inequality and stability.
This project addresses the pressing issue of high recidivism rates among ex-prisoners, aiming to assess the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs in the Netherlands. By examining their impact on earnings, employment prospects, and reintegration, the study seeks to provide crucial insights into creating safer and more inclusive communities and promoting decent work, ultimately contributing to reducing inequality.
FemData aims to connect different disciplines and promote outreach to stimulate the development of more equitable models. To achieve this, we 1) organize talks from researchers and industry experts that provide novel perspectives on gender bias in data, and 2) provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and practical implementations.
This project looks at how sign language (vs. solutions like captions) in (advertisement) videos affects advertisement liking, but also message memory for hard hearing AND abled audiences. The latter is especially relevant, as marketeers often fear a distraction from the displayed content. Depending on results, intervention strategies will be examined.
The difference in the share of men and women who work parttime is largest in the Netherlands. Little is known about the determinants of this differential. The goal of this project is to understand how historical events shaped gender inequality in labor market outcomes in the Netherlands as observed today.
